New Zealand is by one of the best places to explore, safely. Incase you didn’t realise, New Zealand has no deadly animals, no snakes, no crocodiles (yes people have googled this) nothing that could kill you. The worse you could get, is bitten by a white tail spider, which hurts, but doesn’t kill you. (unlike pretty much everything in Australia).
Anyway, if you’ve made it as far as deciding to go to New Zealand, or even booking your flight, your probably wondering whats the best way to get around & see places. Theres a few options, so I’l talk you through some of the options.
1. THE CAMPERVAN: probably the most obvious/common option, and definitely a great option, however can be pretty costly in high season. Theres a couple of options on the campervan front, theres:
- The glamourised car (http://www.spaceshipsrentals.co.nz)
- The extreme budget camper that well might break down (http://www.luckyrentals.co.nz/backpacker-campervan-hire)
- The next budget, but be warned, some of these campers aren’t allowed in certain campsites for being too offensive.. (http://www.wickedcampers.co.nz)
- The start of the luxury ones (http://www.britz.co.nz)
- Another luxury one (http://www.mightycampers.co.nz)
- The best (www.maui.co.nz)
2. BUY YOUR OWN VEHICLE & CAMP: If your in New Zealand on a working holiday, or just there for a while, I would advise buying your own car. If you can afford it, you could buy a campervan, these are highly desirable (particuarly Toyota Hiace) which are perfect for campervans but also as work vehicles therefore get snapped up quickly. Or, you could do what we did, and buy a car (we bought a station wagon/estate car) as it is a lot more economical, and then purchase a tent. This was so much cheaper for us as we ended up camping for 4 months which if we had rented a campervan for that long, it would have cost ALOT.
3. GROUP BUS: If you’re on your own, this is a good way to meet new people, and travel safely. There are two main companies – Kiwi Experience & Stray Travel. They basically do the same thing. You can choose how much of a journey you want to take, and hop on/hop off the bus whenever you like. The only problem is you don’t have the freedom of stopping off at non touristy destinations, but it is still a good option.
If you’re wanting to do something different but scenic, you can opt for the train. There aren’t many trains in New Zealand, but the ones they do have are pretty cool!
Also if you’re curious what the unsafe options are, here is one – hitchhiking. I have never done it, but I know plenty of people who have, or have picked up people. I honestly wouldn’t recommend it, especially if you are on your own, whether driving or being picked up, the person is a complete stranger.. so be wise.
Are you heading to New Zealand? what option have you chosen?
